Welcome to round 2 of our web 2.0 tutorial! This blog has been set-up as part of Manukau Libraries web 2.0 project to encourage staff to experiment and learn about the new and emerging technologies that are reshaping the context of information on the internet today.

This is a self-discovery programme which encourages employees to take control of their own learning and to utilise their lifelong learning skills through exploration and play - yes, that's right! You get paid to play ;)

Week 1 : Box.net - online file storage

  • Visit Box and create a Lite account
  • upload a file of any kind from your pc - it could be an image, a pdf file, a microsoft word document or even an mp3. If you're feeling especially brave you can opt to share your folder and post the link to your findings
  • create a post on your blog. In approximately 50 words consider: Is this anything we woud use for work purposes? Would you use it personally? How easy is it to use? What worked for you? What didn't? What surprised you? Would customers find this site useful? Would you promote this to customers? Why/why not?

Week 2 : Picapp - when a picture is worth a thousand words

  • visit Picapp and explore the site
  • choose an image - any image, it needn't necessarily relate to web 2.0 or libraries at all - and add it to your Week 2 : Picapp post
  • create a post about Picapp, consider: Why did you choose this particular image? Is this site easy for staff to use? Would customers find it simple? How could Manukau Libraries benefit from a site such as Picapp? Do you think that you're likely to use this site again? Would you promote this site to customers? Why/why not?

Week 3 : FeedMyInbox - RSS made simple

Week 4 : TasteSpotting - a community driven visual potluck

  • Visit TasteSpotting and register to join
  • Explore the site
  • Find one recipe/image that you think looks great
  • Create a post and consider: What recipe did you choose? Why this particular recipe? Is this site easy to use? Would you ever use it again? What did you think of this task? Would you prefer that all web 2.0 activities relate directly to libraries and our customers? What did you, personally, get out of TasteSpotting?

Week 5 : SlideShare - online presentations

  • visit SlideShare and take the tour
  • perform a search for any of the following terms: library, libraries, library services, 2.0 - view at least 3 of those associated presentations
  • if you're feeling extra brave sign up and create a slide show of your own
  • create a post and consider: Is it easy for staff to use? Would customers find it simple? Could we use this in the learn.nets and/or in our workrooms? Do you think that you're likely to use this site again? Would you promote this site to customers? Why/why not?

Week 6 : EnCompassCulture - the global bookclub

  • Visit EnCompassCulture
  • Learn more about the site - in particular 'Five ways to search and browse'
  • Click on the 'Books for Adults' category at the top: Select a category: Choose Travel; Select a sub-category: Humorous Travels; Select GO
  • Now that you've mastered the knack of searching for readalike titles/authors, explore this function more (you can search for adult, teen or kids readalikes)
  • Create a post and tell us how this site can be used for readers' advisory purposes, consider: how might customers find EnCompassCulture useful? What would library staff get out of this site? Would you promote EnCompassCulture to customers? Why/why not?
